So you work a nine to five, but you’re also a #girlboss with a side hustle and the work has to be done, but *sigh* – who can be bothered when the new episode of Game of Thrones is about to air?!
We’ve all been there. Let’s be real, working full time AND for yourself is a tough gig. Especially when you’re also trying to build your own brand on top of all the client work!
I won’t pretend I’m an expert in avoiding burnout (trust me, I’ve picked a GoT episode over something I shouldn’t have before!), but King Street Creative has been successfully operating as my side hustle for a good two years now, so here’s a few tips on how I try to manage the workload with other things like life!
Plan your Hustle Days
Having set days to schedule your work around will give you clear guidelines on when is “work” time and when isn’t. For example, I try to make Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday my Hustle Days. This gives me a clear schedule and shows what I can and can’t take on when potential clients ask for quotes and ETAs. This also gives you scheduled days off where you can relax without feeling guilty. Obviously there’s always going to be that urgent job that pops up every now and then, but try to stick to your Hustle Days where possible.
Schedule your social media content
I used to roll my eyes when I saw this because I was all “yeah whatever, I can’t even think of what I want for dinner, let alone what I want to post next week” BUT IT WORKS, PEOPLE! It seriously frees up time, your future self will be thanking you for taking that hour now to plan it out! I tend to make the last two or so hours of my Sunday Hustle Day focussed on MY business. I schedule and create content, do my admin, write blogs (this is new lol, but see where all this scheduling has gotten me?!), fix up my website, etc. Still stuck on what to post? See my next point.
Pay for help (this one is $$ friendly, I promise)
I recently booked myself in for a marketing consultation with Claire from The Keen Collective and I have never felt more prepared or inspired after a meeting! Paying someone like Claire to give my business realistic goals and to keep me accountable really makes me motivated to stick to what we’ve planned out for the business. Claire comes up with amazing ideas relative to me, one of which was hire a VA for the things I can’t do! And so I did! I’ve recently got in contact with the lovely Kristy Whybrow who has been helping across my social media, which in turn has freed up my time for paid client work! Both Kristy and Claire were very budget friendly on my part-time business wallet.
Make time for YOU
Make sure to take time for yourself! Even if it’s a Hustle Day and you’re not feeling the creative juices flowing, take a half an hour break for a walk, bath, book – whatever relaxes you and gets your mind off the task. You’re much better off in the long run resetting yourself for a half an hour, than sitting at the laptop burning yourself out!
These are just a few of the small things that I’ve recently implemented to try and avoid burnout in my business. Remember; plan out your Hustle Days, schedule your social media content and take time for your own business promo, free up your time by hiring budget-friendly experts and most importantly, make time for you!
